Vastu Tips for Kitchen Sink Placement- Do’s and Don’ts

The kitchen sink is a crucial component within any culinary space. This hub of activity is where we engage in numerous tasks central to food preparation, from rinsing fresh produce to scrubbing pots and pans. Its significance extends beyond simple practicality, especially when viewed through the lens of Vastu Shastra.

According to this ancient Indian architectural philosophy, the positioning of the kitchen sink is of paramount importance. It is postulated that the appropriate alignment of this essential feature can usher in an era of joy and prosperity, while errors in its placement may incite a Vastu Dosh, a state of disharmony or imbalance.

The kitchen sink, hence, is more than just a functional element—it's a pivotal energetic nexus within the kitchen. Its strategic placement can significantly influence the overall vitality and flow of the room.

Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of architecture that provides guidelines for design, layout, measurements, ground preparation, space arrangement, and spatial geometry. It's believed to bring positive energy and harmony to space. However, it's important to note that the benefits of Vastu are largely based on belief and there is no scientific evidence supporting them.

When it comes to the placement of kitchen sinks in the context of Vastu Shastra, the following DO’S & DON’TS are commonly suggested:

  • Direction: The sink or any water-related elements in the kitchen should ideally be placed in the north or north-east direction. This is because, in Vastu, the north-east is associated with the water element.
  • Distance from Fire Elements: According to Vastu, the elements of fire and water should not mix. Therefore, it's advised to keep the sink and stove or any fire-related elements at a certain distance from each other. If they need to be placed in close proximity due to space constraints, it's generally recommended that the sink not be directly opposite the stove.
  • Placement of Drain: The outlet for water or the drain is usually recommended to be in the north-east direction.
  • Avoid the Center: The sink, or any water element, should not be placed in the middle of the kitchen.
  • Proper Ventilation: While this is not specific to the sink, it's important in Vastu to ensure that the kitchen has proper ventilation. This helps to keep the energy flowing and maintains a balanced environment.
